The South African wine industry mourns the loss of one of its brightest lights, Mapaseka “Maps” Litabe. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of many. Still, her legacy as a social influencer, a passionate advocate for wine, and a force for transformation and inclusivity in the industry will continue to inspire future generations.
Maps’ journey into the world of wine was not straightforward but a testament to her determination and passion. After graduating from the University of the Western Cape with a BSc in Biotechnology, she initially worked as a successful sales representative in the pharmaceutical industry. However, her love for wine eventually led her back to academia, where she pursued her honours in wine biotechnology at Stellenbosch University, graduating with distinction in wine marketing. This decision marked the beginning of her influential role in the wine world.
Her passion for wine was palpable to everyone she met. Whether through her wine club, WineHunt SA, or her interactions, Maps constantly searched for ways to deepen her knowledge and share her love of wine. She didn’t just enjoy wine – she celebrated it, and she wanted others, especially black South Africans, to experience the richness and diversity of their country’s wine heritage.
Maps’ work wasn’t just about wine but about breaking down barriers. She was deeply committed to the ideals of transformation and inclusivity within an industry that has long struggled with representation. Through WineHunt SA, she aimed to increase awareness, educate, and promote South African wine using technological innovations and social platforms. Maps understood that wine could be a gateway to showcase what we want to see in a wholly integrated wine industry. Because she was indiscriminatory and, without prejudices, delivered positive exposure to all things wine. She used her influence to amplify one of our most immense treasures as a country: our wine culture and how it started to evolve without borders.
Maps was someone who never let challenges hold her back. Even as she faced health struggles, including the kidney failure that ultimately claimed her life, Maps persevered with a positive spirit and relentless energy. She had a hunger for knowledge and was always eager to explore new wineries, attend events, and create opportunities for others to experience the magic of South African wine.
Maps’ story was one of resilience and growth. Her work profiling the 2023 ABSA Top 20 Pinotage award-winning wines demonstrated her commitment to celebrating the sensory diversity of South Africa’s wine offerings. Her research and influence transcended the technical aspects of wine, as she sought to tell the stories behind each bottle – the heritage, the people, and the craft.
In just a few short years, Maps accomplished what many strive for over a lifetime. She founded WineHunt SA, collaborated with wineries, and had ambitions of starting a podcast to spread her message further. Most notably, she had plans to embark on a master’s degree in 2025, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to learning and pushing the boundaries of what was possible for her and others like her in the industry.
Maps’ legacy is one of inclusivity, transformation, and passion. She inspired others to see wine’s beauty and ability to bring people together, no matter their background. We will remember her influence as a social media personality and a leader in the South African wine industry, and her work to create a more inclusive and representative wine industry will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
As we celebrate the life of Mapaseka “Maps” Litabe, we also reflect on her profound contributions to the South African wine industry. Her passing reminds us that transformation is a goal and a responsibility we all share. In her honour, let us continue her work to make wine a symbol of unity, opportunity, and inclusivity for all.
Rest in peace, Maps. We’ll remember your bright smile and passion for life.
