Why young talent matters in the South African wine industry

Youth Month often comes with conversations about the future. In the wine industry, though, it’s worth recognising that many young professionals are not waiting for their turn. They’re already making their mark.

The recent WineLand 30 Under 30 awards brought this sentiment into focus with young people working across different parts of the wine value chain. Their jobs may look very different, but they share a commitment to the industry and a desire to do good work.

It’s easy to talk about young people as future leaders. Yet many are already taking on responsibility, solving problems and helping businesses adapt to changing circumstances. Their influence can be seen in large projects and small decisions alike. Often, it’s simply a different way of looking at a challenge that has existed for years.

The wine industry is facing no shortage of change. Consumer preferences shift, markets evolve, new technology continues to influence the way businesses operate, and climate-related pressures remain a reality for growers and producers. Meeting those challenges requires experience, but it also requires fresh thinking.

That is one reason initiatives like the 30 Under 30 matter. Recognition is part of it, but beyond an award, it shifts the focus to people who are already contributing to the industry. It gives them an opportunity to connect with peers, build relationships and broaden their understanding of the sector beyond their own role. It also offers a reminder that talent exists throughout the industry. Sometimes it sits in positions that attract attention. Often it doesn’t. Many of the people helping move the industry forward are doing so quietly through their day-to-day work.

As we think about Youth Month, perhaps the conversation should be less about preparing young people for the future and more about recognising the role they already play in the present.

The 30 Under 30 class of 2026 showed that there is no shortage of talent in South African wine. The task now is to continue creating an environment where capable people can grow, contribute and build long careers in the industry.

The future will arrive soon enough. In the meantime, there is plenty of good work already being done.
