The South African wine industry has recently achieved two significant milestones on the international stage, showcasing the country’s growing influence and expertise in the global wine sector.
In a historic moment, Yvette van der Merwe, Executive Manager of South Africa Wine Industry Information and Systems (SAWIS), has been appointed President of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Yvette is the first person from Africa to hold this prestigious position since the organisation’s inception in 1924.
With nearly three decades of experience in the South African wine sector, Yvette brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. Her appointment coincides with the OIV’s centennial celebrations, marking a new era of innovation and collaboration in the organisation’s 100-year history.
Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine, expressed pride in Yvette’s achievement, “Yvette’s appointment as President of the OIV is a momentous occasion for her and a proud milestone for the entire South African wine industry. We are confident that her visionary leadership will further elevate the global wine industry while inspiring future generations of wine professionals in Africa and beyond.”
Yvette has played a crucial role in shaping the industry’s trajectory, including serving as the President of the Economy and Law Commission at the OIV and developing the Wine Industry 2020 strategic document. In her new role, she pledges to continue championing the OIV’s mission of promoting scientific research, technical cooperation, and sustainable development in the global wine industry.
In another significant achievement for South Africa’s wine industry, Wendy Jonker Hanekom, Administering Officer of South Africa’s Liquor Products Act and Scientist Manager: Sub directorate Liquor Products, has been awarded the prestigious OIV Merit Award. This recognition highlights her outstanding contributions to the international wine sector.
As a professional natural scientist and former OIV scientific committee Vice President, Jonker Hanekom has been instrumental in advancing South Africa’s position in the global wine community. Her expertise spans the wine industry’s technical, regulatory, and trade aspects, making her an invaluable representative in bilateral and multilateral negotiations.
Notable achievements under Jonker Hanekom’s leadership include the development of an innovative online export platform, strengthening trade relations through the EU-SACU Economic Partnership Agreement and maintaining robust international partnerships to address trade barriers.
“This is a huge honour, and this award humbles me,” says Jonker Hanekom. “Integrity in everything you do is my motto in life, coupled with a lot of hard work and dedication. My love for the wine industry and all things technology motivates me.”
“This recognition from the OIV Steering Committee highlights the vital importance of technical expertise and dedication in advancing the wine industry,” says Basson, “Wendy’s behind-the-scenes work has been instrumental in creating new opportunities for South African wine on the global stage.”
