Pebbles Kitchen is a beacon of hope and change in a world where childhood malnutrition and food insecurity are prevalent issues. Established under the Pebbles Project, the Pebbles Kitchen aims to nourish children’s bodies and minds in need. This vital initiative serves a dual purpose: providing nutritious meals to vulnerable children in agricultural communities and empowering them with the tools they need to thrive.
The Pebbles Kitchen initiative
In 2019, after extensive research and the commitment of the Stichting Clouds Foundation (Netherlands) and Goede Mensen to fund this huge undertaking, the dream of a Pebbles Kitchen became a reality, and a brand new, purpose-built 450m2 food production facility was designed and built to produce these meals.
Pebbles Kitchen operates primarily in South Africa’s Western Cape province, serving children from agricultural backgrounds. The programme focuses on providing healthy and balanced meals to sustain the children’s growth and development. The kitchen offers daily meals that are rich in essential nutrients, ensuring that children receive the sustenance they need to perform well in school and lead healthier lives. Approximately 2500 meals are cooked daily at the Pebbles Kitchen, of which 1000 are delivered to the Pebbles beneficiaries, and the rest are delivered to other NPOs and ECD centres.
The programme goes beyond food preparation and emphasises the importance of nutrition education. By teaching children about healthy eating habits, Pebbles Kitchen empowers them to make informed choices about their diets, knowledge that will benefit them for years to come.

Donation opportunitiesÂ
For those looking to make a more direct impact, Pebbles Kitchen welcomes donations of all sizes. Financial contributions are crucial for the kitchen to sustain its operations and expand its reach. Funds raised go towards purchasing fresh produce, hiring skilled staff, and creating educational programmes that teach children the importance of nutrition.
Donations can be made online through the Pebbles Project website. Regular updates on fund allocations and specific needs are provided, ensuring transparency and accountability. Every contribution, no matter how small, plays a vital role in ensuring the programme can continue its mission.
Food donations from within the local agricultural community are greatly appreciated to help bring down production costs and ensure the long-term viability of this vital programme. Vegetables, fruit, canned goods, rice, pasta, and breakfast cereal with low sugar content are staple items in the Pebbles Kitchen, and donations of these items help to bring down costs significantly. The Pebbles Kitchen is equipped with a refrigerated vehicle, enabling them to collect perishable donations before expiration. Additionally, all donations are eligible for a Section 18A Certificate.
Building a community of support
Sophia Warner, Founder & CEO of Pebbles Project, “As we celebrate the 5th anniversary of Pebbles Kitchen in 2024, we reflect on the incredible journey we’ve undertaken to support our community. Our kitchen has become a cornerstone in providing nutritious meals to children and families, thanks to our donors’ unwavering support and our team’s dedication. Our impact on improving food security and local employment is a testament to our commitment to fostering a healthier and more prosperous future for all.”
The Pebbles Kitchen serves more than just food; it serves hope, education, and opportunity. Currently servicing education centres in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Somerset West, Wellington, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Grabouw, Citrusdal and Clanwilliam while also providing meals to other NPOs, the intention is to grow its footprint beyond their current client base throughout the Cape Winelands.
With each meal prepared and shared, a difference is made – not only in the nutritional health of children but in their futures. By engaging with this transformative programme through donations, becoming a new customer, or volunteering, you can be part of a movement dedicated to nurturing the next generation. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential, one nutritious meal at a time. Join the movement, make an impact, and help seek a healthier, happier future for all children.
